Vinnie sent me something similar today
An Unsolicited Commercial Love Story
Here is an unfolding love story told through spam by the inimitable Rob Cockerham.
What is interesting is that Vinnie sent me the last ad because it was so funny. And then right after he received the Christian Singles ad, he received the following:
Um.... ok, so I'm not as smart as Rob Cockerham, so I had to set up a different page for what Vinnie received.
It reads,
Are You Stressed Out Because of Debt? Forgive us our Debts. Matt: 6:12
Be Debt free in as little as 12 months
Stop debt collectors from calling
Avoid the stigma of bankruptcy
ChristianDebtHelpers.com - Click Here!
So it leads me to wonder if the bag that the woman wasn't actually free (as the first two ads at cockeyed.com suggests) but instead put her into debt. Later.

Bring it on
The New York Times > Business > Media & Advertising > The News Media: Ink-Stained Wretches Angle for Some Ink:
"Given the sudden concentration of media outlets at the Republican National Convention, the various players are fighting to be heard above the din. CNN has taken over the Tick Tock diner on Eighth Avenue near Madison Square Garden as the broadcast site of 'Crossfire,'' while its rival Fox News has come up with an unexpected guest in the form of Bono, the lead singer of U2 and the rare celebrity who actually knows something about public policy. Bono is booked on 'The O'Reilly Factor,' with Bill O'Reilly as host, on Wednesday night, promising a conversation between two men who would seem to have little in common besides their Irish heritage."

Rafting
Thanks to Renee, I have some pictures from the rafting trip.
Here I am enjoying a nice, no wait I mean body-freezing and brain-debilitating swim in the 55-degree water. If you look closely, it seems as if I'm smiling. I'm not - I'm gritting my teeth hoping to not drown b/c I can't move my arms. Cindy and Penny are the other two brave souls in the water with me. It may seem as they are swimming around and enjoying themselves - but what really happened is that I pushed off of them to get back to the raft. Sorry about that, girls.

Here's me trying to look stoic after getting out of the water. I don't think it worked. It almost seems like one of those high school/college graduation pictures, where they tell you to look into the future. I'm thinking about warm clothes and hot chocolate. What you can't see in this picture is Anna getting ready to push me back into the water, shattering my dreams of hot chocolate like an icicle knocked off of the eaves.
And finally, here's our brave crew (L to R: Me, Gabriel, Anna, Renee, Cindy, Rupa, Penny and the guide). No overdramatic comment to go with this one.

WTF?
The New York Times > Washington > Campaign 2004 > News Analysis: Upstaging Before the Show in True New York Fashion:
"'I hope that all Americans are taking a close look at those protesters and what they represent. I don't think they represent American values. It's not their freedom of speech that we disagree with,' Mr. Glodt said, 'it's the content of what they're saying. It really only motivates us even more to go home and work harder at the grass-roots level and make sure people are going out and voting.'"
A bit strong of a statement, don't you think?

Don't say "war on terror"
Linguistics prof. George Lakoff dissects the "war on terror" and other conservative catchphrases:
"Bush has positioned war with Iraq as part of the 'war on terror.' How can progressives frame opposition to the Iraq war without being tarred as unpatriotic or as in league with the terrorists?
...
The Bush reply is always avoidance: that we're better off without Saddam Hussein. Clinton gave the clearest rebuttal of that argument: There other bad guys like Saddam Hussein in the world, in North Korea, Iran, and Sudan. There are bad guys all over the place. Are we going to invade all these countries? As Clinton said, we can't possibly attack, imprison or kill everyone who's against us. We have to make friends."
This is such a great article.

Bush Greenwatch
Bush Greenwatch
"In a town meeting in Arkansas on August 3, Vice President Cheney asserted again that '[w]e've taken large chunks of the country and put it off limits to any kind of exploration or development...large parts of the Rocky Mountain West are off limits.' Cheney blamed this alleged lack of access for the fact that 'we aren't producing [oil and gas] here at home'.
"An extensive investigation by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found Cheney's assertion to be little more than myth. 'The west has been wide open to the oil and gas industry for the last 22 years,' Dusty Horwitt, one of the lead authors, told BushGreenwatch. 'The rhetoric' about lack of access, Horwitt said, 'is just an attempt to open especially sensitive lands to friends of the administration.'
"The EWG study reports that oil and gas interests poured over $75 million into political campaigns, of which 79% went to Republicans."

It concluded that they cost an average of $4 more a square foot, but that over a 20-year period they would generate savings of $48.87 a square foot (in current dollars) for standard- and silver-certified buildings, and $67.31 for gold- and platinum-certified buildings."

Ron Reagan's Speech on cell stem research
From RJ:
"Post this link on your BLOG. It is Ron Reagan Jr.'s speech at the DNC. This does not qualify for your usual subject matter as it has nothing to do with that stupid fucking time wasting game of baseball."
______________
Real player req'd for the link. Here's a link to just the text.
Excerpt:
"Let me try and paint as simple a picture as I can while still doing justice to the incredible science involved. Let's say that ten or so years from now you are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. There is currently no cure and drug therapy, with its attendant side-effects, can only temporarily relieve the symptoms.
"Now, imagine going to a doctor who, instead of prescribing drugs, takes a few skin cells from your arm. The nucleus of one of your cells is placed into a donor egg whose own nucleus has been removed. A hit of chemical or electrical stimulation will encourage your cell's nucleus to begin dividing, creating new cells which will then be placed into a tissue culture. Those cells will generate embryonic stem cells containing only your DNA, thereby eliminating the risk of tissue rejection. These stem cells are then driven to become the very neural cells that are defective in Parkinson's patients. And finally, those cells -- with your DNA -- are injected into your brain where they will replace the faulty cells whose failure to produce adequate dopamine led to the Parkinson's disease in the first place."
That is so damn amazing. A very important issue - and one which makes Ron, Jr. and Nancy Reagan seem... wonderful.
To stay on the socially-conscious plane, go to DATA - Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa.

President Bush's Medals
Taking a closer look at the War Medals of George W. Bush
American Star: I, like most people, figured that George W. Bush's American Star Medal was won for valor in the face of tremendous challenges. I had never heard of one before, so I just figured they were very rare.
When I took a closer look, I realized that the "medal" is actually an American fifty-cent coin pressed into a crinkled-up wad of gold foil. The foil appears to be from Rolo chocolate-covered caramels. The yellow star backing appears to have been made from the plastic top of a Planter's Mixed Nuts Can.
Check out all of the medals.

Fox Sports sucks, Fox News sucks, The Post sucks (except for the sports)
New York Post Online Edition: sports:
"Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt slipped and fell as he was about to pitch. A balk was called. And, as the replay aired that would show Oswalt losing his footing, the sponsorship graphic attached to replays - a large blue box that read, 'Panasonic Ideas For Life' - covered the view of Oswalt's feet. 'We could see [what happened],' Hernandez said with a mix of annoyance and incredulity, 'if you get that Panasonic sign out of the way.' Beautiful. And no good."
I understand that Phil Mushnick is trying to make a point about Hernandez as an announcer - but isn't the larger problem that the advertisement is over the part of the screen that is showing the action? I read this on the PATH the other day and had the the same thought. And last night, while watching the Yankee game, I was even more infuriated. The play of the game, as decided by the fans of course, was voted to be Jeter's defensive plays, and I don't disagree as he made two fine plays. Rather, what pissed me off was that Fox knew what the plays were and still had a huge advertisement on the bottom of the screen so you couldn't see Jeter lay out and make the diving stop.
Are you kidding me?!?! With all that time they can't preview the damn play? Or check it out first? Piss me off to no end.
I can't wait until I'm old and more curmudgeonly and retired, so that instead of blogging about it, I'll write to Fox. But until then, this will suffice.

Eric Neel and I agree
ESPN.com: Page 2 - Ripken's streak is overrated:
Great line after great line:
"The Streak is overrated."
"But don't tell me The Streak makes him great. The streak is a curiosity; it's an historical weirdness. He was better and bigger than The Streak suggests. Making The Streak his legacy, making it the first thing people think about when they think about Cal Ripken Jr., turns him into a circus act."
"So he showed up for work every day. Good. People do that. Longevity isn't exactly an accomplishment. Endurance isn't, in and of itself, great."
"And the truth is (we all know this), The Streak cost him. It cost the Orioles. It cost their fans."
"Take a look at his career month-by-month numbers: In June, over 1,314 career ABs, he was a .299 hitter with a .469 slugging average. In September, in 1,123 at-bats, he was a .246 hitter with a .396 slugging average. Throughout his career, there was a post-All-Star-Game dip in power and average numbers."
"I see a guy who was selfish and dishonest about the reasons for it."
"Show me something more than a guy trotting out to the spot between second and third every night."
And on and on - I might as well have just copied the whole article.
But I agree with the article, I'm not impressed with the streak. By the time I really started following baseball, he wasn't a great player and most people loved him for his game. Which was silly to me, so I hated him.

Shit that pisses me off and makes me want to see Fahrenheit 911 again
"WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 -Much of the information that led the authorities to raise the terror alert at several large financial institutions in the New York City and Washington areas was three or four years old, intelligence and law enforcement officials said on Monday."
"This afternoon, Pakistan's interior minister, Faisal Saleh Hayyat, announced that Pakistani forces had captured Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian Al Qaeda operative wanted in connection with the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The timing of this announcement should be of particular interest to readers of The New Republic. Earlier this month, John B. Judis, Spencer Ackerman, and Massoud Ansari broke the story of how the Bush administration was pressuring Pakistani officials to apprehend high-value targets (HVTs) in time for the November elections--and in particular, to coincide with the Democratic National Convention. Although the capture took place in central Pakistan "a few days back," the announcement came just hours before John Kerry will give his acceptance speech in Boston."

Robert L. Brent: Calming Parents' Fears About Environmental Hazards (by lying to them)
The New York Times > Health > A Conversation With Robert L. Brent: Calming Parents' Fears About Environmental Hazards:
"Love Canal was an example of a terrible environmental problem that should be cleaned up, but there was no evidence of risk to the people who lived there."
Here are some effects: "...the entire neighborhood was sick. Men, women, and children suffered from many conditions--cancer, miscarriages, stillbirths, birth defects, and urinary tract diseases."
I understand Mr. Brent's arguments about doses and exposure frequency, but I think he is going a bit far. One of the sites we are remediating was being investigated by the government as a possible school location. Who was going to tell the parents that it was ok to send their kids to a school that used to be a chemical repackaging facility and which had a huge soil/groundwater problem?
