Michigan

Some blogging from afar.

Terr and I left our house at 1 am to pick up Chad. Then we drove up the Thruway to 90 West. Across into Canada through Niagra Falls. Then through the flat "Land to the North" to Windsor where we caught the tunnel into Detroit. I drove it, with Chad in the front seat and Terrence under a sea of bags in the back seat.

The reason we left so early is that we were trying to catch a 1:05 game at Comerica. We got there at 11am and got a really close parking spot - but it was suprising that not too many fans had shown up yet. After noting that Tigers fans suck and don't come out to the stadium we found out that the game was actually at 7:05, so getting there at 11 am wasn't really necessary. After having drove 10 hrs straight we needed some coffee and eggs, conveniently purchased at a diner in Greektown (a section of Detroit). Even more convenient was the casino across the street. We blew a couple hours in the casino, not too much gambling, but plenty of Miller Lite.

We also took a trip on the People Mover, which was basically a monorail. It was interesting that there was what looked like a fully functioning entrance to the monorail that had been closed in favor of an entrance inside the casino. How convenient. And one of the stations was closed so you had to ride it all the way back around to get to your original stop. At least it only cost $0.50. And I took a nap on it.

Detroit seemed a bit rundown, and very desolate in the morning. The Tigers game at Comerica was packed, so that seemed to liven up the city a bit. On the Comerica webpage through MLB it says "Comerica Park features a main scoreboard larger than any other facility in existence. The face of the structure, in fact, is equivalent to the size of the face of the Fox Theatre Office Building facing Woodward Avenue (180' wide). The structure includes one video screen (42'x24'), one large black and white matrix board with the line score (64'x34'), and a color matrix board (42'x24')."

What it should have said is they have one kick-ass video screen. And one really shitty color screen. It's supposed to be a new stadium (April 11, 2000), so how is it that they still have a screen where the hands clapping still don't match up with the sound?

Anyways, pictures to come from Chad. The Orioles romped the Tigers (as they did today, too - but at least they had a chance late into the game today). We left early because we were falling asleep in the stands. And when we left it turned out that we parked where the season ticket holders park, so we left without having to pay anything. Sweet.

Then we drove up to East Lansing where Mike (my older brother) and Cheryl (his wife) live. Cheryl works at Michigan State University. It was a beautiful place. Huge! It was like Penn State where the land just keeps going and going - and they have buildings for everything.

Including the Meat Laboratory.

And the Hancock Turfgrass Research Center.

Tonight is mexican food night - then off to Kalamazoo, Michigan for pictures of anything Derek Jeter and a plane trip home.

And finally, here are three pictures taken at MSU (and from a moving car).

Sparty.

The stadium.

One of the engineering buildings.

FORGIONE PAVING AND CONSTRUCTION:

"A. The short answer is yes. Ranging from top quality sealers to mixtures of old motor oil and other hazardous waste."

I don't think I'd like my driveway sealed with hazardous waste. Is that legal?

In Aging Port, a Glimpse of the Old New York

The New York Times > New York Region > In Aging Port, a Glimpse of the Old New York:

"The Hidden Harbor boat tours on Saturday, which run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., launch from a former railroad car float tied up to the west end of 23rd Street."

Not that I'm going to be here, but it still looks interesting.

My roommate had most of it filled out already

Though I'm not sure if the color was eye color or what. Blue seemed like a fine enough choice, being both eye color and color most worn.

I think I'd rather have Reluctant Hero (it's the May 13 post). I mean, really, I like monkeys and all, but that seems a bit ridiculous.

Review: Fight Club:

"Finding comfort in the 'bitch tits' of Robert Paulson (Meat Loaf), our hero cries his heart out and realises he is still alive after all."

Hmmm.... Wonder if there's any connection.

Good Lord

www.AndrewSullivan.com - Daily Dish:

"This is the dream of the religious right: to destroy the Catholic base of the Democratic party, create a hard-right rump of true believers, and integrate the latter into the G.O.P. I can barely believe that the Catholic hierarchy is doing Karl Rove's work for him. But then, as we have discovered, the current hierarchy is capable of almost anything."

Yankees smack Spider-Man down

ESPN.com - MLB - Yankees balk at Spider-Man in-game promotion:

"One of 15 teams at home that weekend, the Yankees insist they will put ads on the bases only during batting practice, and then just for one game, team spokesman Rick Cerrone said."

Here's a picture of the base.

All right, so I'm happy the Yankees aren't putting up with this shit. Despite the fact that there will be an advertisement in the on-deck circle. And that they will make more money off of it than most teams.

But contrast that with this article (posted May 4th) regarding advertisements on uniforms during the Japan season opener: Selig's a big, fat liar. Money quote: "Tim Brosnan, baseball's executive vice president for business, has said he is open to considering additional uniform advertising in the future, but Selig and chief operating officer Bob DuPuy have said it is not under consideration."

Umm, yeah. It actually was under consideration. And you both look foolish announcing this 2 days later.

And this: Mother's Day advertisements.

Nice Yankees-based summation at commerce_comet.

ESPN.com - MLB - Power 10; Bottom 5:

"So we've finally figured it out: Nothing fixes a .217-hitting team like facing Hudson, Mulder and Zito. And you wonder why Vegas doesn't like betting on baseball?"

So right next the article "Yanks win 8th Straight" is the link to the Power Rankings. Red Sox (2th - with two first place votes), Yankees (6th). Unbelievable! The Sox just lost 5 or 6 in a row, the Yankees win 8 - including hitting first place after being 4 1/2 back a week ago.

Damn I hate baseball writers.

Go Yankees.

My perfect woman...

A Fuzzy Point of View...:

I thought I'd add to their discussion while ruing that fact that my roommate doesn't include hyperlinks and I it's hard to copy just the link for some reason on his page. First their take:

"So Colleen & I in one of our many daily conversations somehow ended up talking about our 'ideal mate'. She keeps threating to post mine to yahoo personals, so I'm making this first strike & doing her one better:

Fuzzy's:
a strong woman, not afraid to take charge, stand up for herself, but not overly dominating. She knows when to speak up. She's intelligent, clever, witty, fun. A good storyteller. Technically savy, but that doesn't have to be related to her profession. Not afraid to have an argument, can be stubborn on occasion ;-). Logical, able to have in-depth conversations on a topic without allowing herself to be ruled by emotions. Natural leadership skills, but not necessarily any desire to be 'in charge'. Driven, a hard worker. Organized, prefers order to chaos. Open-minded. Believes in equality in the relationship. Physically she's not towering over me tall, nor morbidly obese. Naturally attractive, curly hair prefered but not required. ticklish :-P

And now the better one, Colleen's:
The man for me is a lovable, sexy, warm and goofy, all charm and idealism, love obsessed dreamer. He is someone around my age who isn't afraid to open up to someone and connect on all levels. He doesn't pretend to be anything he's not. He's not into playing games. He is honest and caring, probably a big dork at times but adorable none-the-less. He's smart, able to engage me in conversation for hours on end. He's someone who understands me (or at least tries to). He's a culturally aware renaissance guy who is willing to be spontaneous. He's part tiger and part teddy bear in the bedroom. Chemistry is key. And if he happens to be charming too, I wouldn't complain. Physically, he's at least 6ft tall with dark hair and light eyes. A slender build. Light skin. Not too much...."

Me: The woman for me is female.
