Georgia Takes on "Evolution" - in the most asshole sort of way

Georgia Takes on "Evolution":

"Still, Ms. Cox, who was elected to the post in 2002, said the concept would be taught, as well as 'emerging models of change' that challenge Darwin's theories. 'Galileo was not considered reputable when he came out with his theory,' she said."

OK, Galileo was specifically considered reputable - and that's why he was a threat to the church. If he were some whack-job without any credibility the church wouldn't have cared at all what he was saying. But he was, correctly, admired for his scientific discoveries and theories. But this lady, Ms. Cox, doesn't want to hear that at all. Because, like Georgia, she's doing it in the most asshole sort of way. I think that should be their new state motto.

Georgia: doing it in the most asshole sort of way.

It's perfect because it's vague, the grammar is just slightly off and it correctly points out that they're assholes in Georgia.

The Importance of Being Upstate

NYT - Upstate politics or something or other

"As for Mr. Schumer, it might appear as if there are the makings of a new sitcom in the very idea of the senator making the rural rounds, the deep strains of Brooklyn in his voice. But, in fact, he has become a comfortable fit at county fairs, town hall meetings, parades, tulip festivals and the like. (He also takes nothing for granted as he campaigns for re-election this year, even though he has an enormous war chest and no Republican challenger yet.)"

A. I like that it is referred to as "Upstate." Do any other states have an "upstate?"

B. Senator Schumer is great.

Bio: MLK, Jr.

The King Center:

"Just a little more than a year after Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed, his younger brother, Alfred Daniel, died in a tragic accident at his home in Atlanta. Funeral services were held at Ebenezer Baptist Church on July 24, 1969, where Alfred Daniel had served as co-pastor.

On Sunday, June 30, 1974, Mrs. Alberta Williams King, the mother of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was shot and killed as she sat at the organ in the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Again, through an act of violence, there ended a life that was totally nonviolent, a life that was thoroughly Christian, a life that reflected love for all persons and unselfish service to humankind. Again, the indomitable faith of the King family was put to the test, and again love prevailed amid the greatest sadness. The Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr., bereft by the violent deaths of his two sons and now by the equally tragic death of his devoted wife, could still say - and did say - at her funeral service on July 3, "I cannot hate any man.""

Great guy, MLK, Jr. was, but I think the King Center may be overly dramatizing the situation. A.D.'s death wasn't violent as far as I can tell. At least not in the sense they are trying to pass it off in.

Update: Plagarism?

Update II: Is drowning considered violent? Check out the 2nd paragraph. Possibly, look at #183.

Disclaimer Music Review Archive: U:

"This time around, producer Eno apparently did things his way. This is a sparse, clattering collection of computerized noises, keyboards, and effects that is, quite simply, the best thing U2 ever did. The title track is an epic swipe at the advertising industry (Don't worry baby/ It'll be alright/ You've got the right shoes to get you through the night) that builds from a droning, chattering pulse to a great rocker. "Numb" lets Edge sing, and he does so in a literally monotonous chant that's hypnotic and droll, while "Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car" is danceable and surprisingly weird. It's futuristic, catchy, and clever. Woohoo! Grade: A "

The cleanest kitchens, he said, were in the homes of bachelors, who never wiped up and just put their dirty dishes in the sink. "

Rob Neyer on Matsui

Rob Neyer 2003 :: OSC Interview:

"OSC: Angel Berrora beat Hideki Matsui to win the Rookie of the Year award in the AL.
Some will say the closest vote ever was due to two extremely good players having skills that matched. But, some will say that Matsui technically isn’t a rookie.
Do you feel that import players are being looked at differently now in this “post Nomo/Ichiro” era?

Neyer: Well, I think that looking at it from a performance perspective, and not anything else, I thought that Matsui was going to win.
And I thought he should have won. I would have voted for him. Mainly because his hitting stats were a little better than Berrora – not a lot better – but to me, the real deciding factor was that Berroa plays in a great hitters park. I mean, Kauffman Stadium has been like Coors Field over the last two years.
But, getting back to the original question, I think it’s likely that out of the 28 voters, I suspect a few of them down-graded Matsui because of where he came from. And in this case, all it would have taken was a few votes flip-flopping, then, Matsui would win. I think that it was the deciding factor."

I vote that Rob Neyer gets a vote.

I hate Jim Caple

ESPN.com - MLB - Caple: Rocket in reverse:

"Now, it was one thing to lose Clemens -- after all, the man insisted all year he was retiring -- but it was quite another to bungle the Pettitte free agency. Had the Yankees pursued Pettitte more aggressively, he might have re-signed with New York instead of Houston and Clemens wouldn't have even been interested in the Astros. "

Unabashedly a Yankee-hater, I hate him right back.

This quote is especially ridiculous after reading Bob Klapsich's account (and Brian Cashman's view) of why Pettitte left New York. To be home, that's why. He took less money to go home and there are even rumours that he may have made up his mind earlier. So Caple's argument is way off-base.

Sorry, Charlie (washingtonpost.com)

This is a great article. More and more I believe that Pete Rose shouldn't be in the HOF. I enjoy the part about "integrity, sportsmanship, character" being necessary for enshrinement.

But what I wanted to point out is that the two "Advertiser Links" at the bottom of the page are for "Pete Rose Autographs" at www.HallOfFameMemorabilia and "Harrelson and Rose Photo" from www.sportsgifts.com.

So it's not bad enough the they're linking to places that make Rose money after lambasting him, but one of the places is named after the same HOF that George Will believes he shouldn't be in.

Ridiculous.

Also notice that Pete Rose has an extremely large melon. No wonder he used to have bad haircuts, anything to cover up that monstrosity.

BP's HOF Roundup

Baseball Prospectus - The Class of 2004:

"Mattingly was the golden child of the Great Yankee Dark Age between the Billy Martin/Bob Lemon World Series teams and the Joe Torre ones. At his peak he was a fantastic hitter, an RBI machine, a slick fielding first baseman, and a perennial MVP candidate. But back woes sapped him of his power, making him a very ordinary player aside from his 1984-1987 run, and bringing his career to a premature end at age 34. He never reached the postseason until his final season; his .417/.440/.708 line in a losing cause in the 1995 AL Division Series against Seattle provided a bittersweet coda to his career, and the Yanks' success after he left tends to diminish his stature."

Then at the end of the section they go and say that Keith Hernandez should be in. But he'll have to be a Veteran's Committee inductee now. Donnie Baseball still has a chance.

Excellent, long article.

Scalzi + Asshole

Pettitte + Adultery

Those are probably the last two things I thought might link to The UberPlexer.

For clarification: John Scalzi might be an asshole, but I like his writing. So I can neither confirm, nor deny this. Andy Pettitte is a god-fearing man, and I liked his pitching with the Yankees (damn Houston!). And while I can neither confirm nor deny any infidelities, Andy doesn't seem to fit the bill. It may have been Kevin Costner however.

Everyone should read the New Yorker.

"3. The oil in the Saturn wagon gets changed every three thousand miles—not five thousand miles, not seven thousand miles, not ten thousand miles—and I don’t care what she or the owner’s manual or the guy in the service department or the Internet says. Three. Thousand. God. Damned. Miles."

Evaluating the Dowd Report

This is a pretty good refutation (?) of Bill James' take on Pete Rose. Favorite part of Bill James' take is that it's located in the middle of the book. This super important essay found in the Right Fielders section.

Like the Dowd Report, and Bill James' version, this was too long to read at the moment.

LILEKS (James) The Bleat:

"I’m probably reading too much into this, and I’m sure a little googling would prove my thesis to be shaky and fallacious, but: is it not typically American to celebrate the eve of the new year rather than the arrival of the thing itself? We don’t celebrate the old dead year shuffling off to die, or the new year that gets dropped squalling in our laps. We celebrate that giddy boozy interval between what was and what will be."
